A Year of Garden Gear

I’m excited that so many beginner gardeners will be participating in the Grow-a-long this year. I posted about the delays that are occurring in the gardening industry related to seed shipping. I had originally planned to not overwhelm you with all the gear at once, but I’m expecting the same thing happening to seeds, will happen to other gardening gear later in the season. So I wanted to make a simple blogpost of all my suggestions for all my gear for beginning gardeners. This list is a culmination of months of research and years having tried the same items or similar ones. I made sure to try and save you money (the large list can definitely add up) but I personally hate buying gear one year only having to upgrade or dispose of it the next year. So keep that in mind as you review the list. Many of these items you might already own, so no need to replace what you have just for the sake of doing so.

I’m writing in mid January so the most pressing categories to order from are Seed Starting, Garden Beds, Irrigation and Tools. Soil (which I’ll fully finish out and be blogging about in the coming weeks) should be sourced locally so that should begin to be thought about once you’ve determined what your Garden Beds will be. Plant supports can definitely be put off a few weeks, but we will definitely want to have those by the the time our tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants and peppers go in the ground, which is right after the day of last frost.

Below I embedded my Airtable database of Garden Gear. I’ll keep this up to date all the time as I discover new gear. You can click each item which will trigger a pop up and the hyperlinks to the exact product are clickable from there. I categorized and sorted by category. Desktop readers have the ability to filter down and sort even further.

  1. Hi Tom, do you have a humidity dome that you recommend? I purchased the PlantBest 50 pot greenhouse kit from my local nursery, but I don’t believe it comes with a dome/cover.

    Thanks!

  2. Hi Tom,

It looks like you use cages for your zucchini plants (as shows in the picture above). Do you find using cages for your zucchini plants helpful since I know the plant can spread out a lot?

    Thanks,

    Ashley

    1. I learned a lot last year from growing zucchini’s in cages. This year I’m growing a vining zucchini (Centercut Squash) instead of a normal Zucchini which from my experience really did not enjoy being trained into a cage.
